When it comes to kids Birthday parties I struggle a little bit I have to be honest.

You see, I’m not a huge fan of traditional party food. Yep I used to the be the kid right into all the lollies and cake and all-the-things and I remember the excitement but, now, knowing what I do about food and nutrition I just can’t host a party that loaded with sugar and preservatives and artificial colourings.

At the same time though, I still want my kids to have an amazing Birthday and I can’t just not throw them a party. I’m incapable.

So over the years I’ve tested and tweaked and tested again to come up with a collection of party favourite recipes that will pass the test of most kids.

When I say pass the test what I mean is, kids who are used to the caster sugar and plain flour version of things. The kids who regularly get treats that come in packets from the supermarket.

There is no judgement from me. I just prefer to keep those things out of my kids diets, so as a result, they think that the food I make is pretty good as they’re not accustomed to anything richer or sweeter.

I know the feeling though. When I first started cooking with more wholesome, less processed ingredients, I had to add a lot of sweetness for my tastebuds to like it.

Now, a tiny bit of sweet and I’m good but to some, it’s probably not enough. These recipes should satisfy all though.

10 healthy kids party recipes

So what are my requirements for healthy kids party food?

  1. It must be made of wholefood ingredients. What do I mean by that? Well I mean that it must be made from scratch (like each ingredient was once grown) and the ingredients need to be as unprocessed as possible. Some of my favourite baking ingredients are spelt flour and rapadura sugar which substitute pretty easily for caster sugar and plain white flour.
  2. It must be delicious. That one is a given.
  3. It must look good. We eat with our eyes. Kids especially. They’re highly unlikely to eat something that looks a bit too different.
  4. Preferably it can be made in advance.

Ok on to the recipes…

1 of 10 healthy kids party recipes – Banana muesli bars

These banana muesli bars are not only great for parties but they’re a favourite snack in our house.

They can be made in advance and frozen and they’re really quick to make, nutritious and delicious.

You can change up the recipe to just use seeds if you can’t use nuts.

Want to make it a little fancy for a party? You could add chocolate chips or drizzle melted chocolate across the top. I like to use organic dark chocolate.

Gluten free chocolate chip muffins

I don’t think you can have a party without chocolate can you? These gluten-free chocolate chip muffins literally taste like a rich, flour-filled cafe muffin but there’s not a grain of flour in sight.

You can also make these babies in advance and freeze but if possible, they’re really good straight out of the oven.

Super quick wholefood vanilla cupcakes

Super quick wholefood vanilla cupcakes were created when my then two-year-old requested just plain cupcakes with blue and yellow icing as his Birthday cake.

Being a fan of going over the top with cakes, I was a little disappointed at first but seeing how happy he was about being able to choose his cake made it all worth it.

The batter is made entirely in the food processor hence the ‘super quick’ status. You could probably substitute in gluten-free flour if needed.

I use Hoppers natural food colouring and sprinkles.

4 of 10 healthy kids party recipes – Cauliflower Popcorn

Ok so this one might be a little hard to get past some kids but my two both LOVE cauliflower popcorn and my big boy is super fussy.

This would be best served straight from the oven so to prep, chop up all your cauliflower, toss it in the spices and oil and put it in a container then all you have to do is bake it right before serving.

Party sausage rolls

These are so good we often have them for dinner. They’ve got hidden veggies (and fruit) and you can make them in advance and freeze them.

I usually freeze them raw then let them thaw before baking right when you need them.

Nut free apricot bliss balls

This recipe was originally from kindy.

The resident chef used to make 100s at a time and they were a serious favourite amongst all the kids so I had to include them as one of my 10 healthy kids party recipes.

Gluten free wholefood chocolate chip cookies

I am yet to meet a kid who doesn’t like these choc chip cookies and they’re loaded with goodness from seeds and buckwheat flour.

They work really well to make in advance and freeze in a container then just thaw an hour or so before you want them ready. I often also have a stash of these in the freezer for school lunchboxes.

Gingerbread loaf cake

I used this recipe to make my son’s Birthday cake one year. I doubled the recipe and made it in two round tins then topped it with a ginger buttercream icing.

No one could believe it was ‘healthy’ and I didn’t even dare to tell them that the secret ingredient was pumpkin puree.

Make your own jelly lollies

Ok so apparently, or according to my kids, it’s not a party without lollies (or candy) of some type so instead of buying the pre-packaged versions that are usually loaded with sugar, corn syrup and artificial colours… basically they’re about as unnatural as you can get, I make my own.

They’re way easier than you’d think and you can make whatever flavour you like. There are some pretty adorable moulds around the web too to even make snake shapes and all sorts of things.

Sugar free tomato sauce

I also realise that you can’t have a sausage roll without tomato sauce (I’ve never been into it myself) so I really like this sugar-free version that’s made with whole ingredients and no nasties.

What about you? What’s your philosophy on kids Birthday parties? I will add that when the kids go to a party and there’s all the food I wouldn’t normally allow I don’t ban them.

I tell them to remember that that food can hurt their tummies and advise them to go easy or point them to the better options but ultimately, I want them to learn for themselves what makes their bodies feel good and what doesn’t.
