In adults with gingivitis the quality of self-performed mechanical plaque removal is not sufficiently effective and should be improved, and it appears that a single oral hygiene instruction, describing the use of a mechanical toothbrush, in addition to a single professional 'oral prophylaxis' provided at baseline, had a significant, albeit small, positive effect on the reduction of gingIVitis.

It is concluded that a routine instruction to use floss is not supported by scientific evidence and the dental professional should determine, on an individual patient basis, whether high-quality flossing is an achievable goal.

Adjunct use of CHX mouthwash during fixed-appliance treatment is associated with improved gingival inflammation, plaque control, and pocket depths, but caution is warranted and recommendations about CHX use during orthodontic treatment of children/adults should consider the heterogeneous patient response, cost-effectiveness, and potential adverse effects.

A concern is that only one type of electric toothbrush, the rotating oscillating toothbrush consistently demonstrated a statistically significant benefit over manual toothbrushes, and the majority of studies did not meet the standards for inclusion in moving forward it will be important to conduct methodologically sound studies demonstrating the ability of power toothbrushed to reduce the incidence and prevalence of caries and periodontal disease.
