That's exactly what PPG, the global paints and coatings giant, is tackling head-on with a groundbreaking initiative in the Netherlands.
PPG's SIGMA COATINGS™ brand has teamed up with waste management experts FIRE-OFF and packaging specialists Dijkstra Plastics to launch Sigma EcoCollect, a nationwide recycling program designed to revolutionize how professional painters handle their waste. This program allows painters, for the first time, to easily return empty plastic and metal packaging – even containers from competitor brands – to be recycled. But here's where it gets interesting: This isn't just about reducing waste; it's about creating a closed-loop system.
So, how does it work? Professional painters can drop off their used, empty packaging at over 90 Sigma Coatings sales locations across the Netherlands. These collection points then become hubs for FIRE-OFF, who manage the logistics of gathering the materials. Dijkstra Plastics then takes over, processing the collected plastic and metal so that it can be repurposed. And this is the part most people miss: the ultimate goal is to transform this waste back into new Sigma Coatings packaging. The beauty of this closed-loop system is that it minimizes waste and reduces the need for virgin materials, creating a more sustainable cycle.
The Sigma EcoCollect initiative directly supports PPG’s ambitious sustainability goals, specifically its commitment to increasing the amount of post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic and metal in its packaging. This isn’t just a feel-good project; it’s a strategic move to align with the growing demand for eco-friendly products and practices. In fact, a pilot project launched in September 2024 revealed that the initiative sparked important conversations about sustainability with customers, leading to a noticeable increase in the amount of packaging returned. Based on this promising start, Sigma EcoCollect will be rolled out to 32 PPG Sigma Service Centers and 61 Sigma Coatings wholesalers.
This initiative is deeply rooted in PPG’s TOMORROW INCLUDED® concept, a broader framework designed to showcase the eco-friendly attributes of PPG's architectural products and empower customers to achieve their own sustainability objectives. As Petra Bijma, PPG brand manager, B2B Sigma Coatings Benelux, Architectural Coatings, puts it, "This program is a powerful step toward circularity. It aligns with PPG’s global sustainability targets, including reducing scope 3 emissions and increasing the use of recycled materials in packaging and limiting waste. Our customers are looking for ways to lower their environmental impact. This initiative not only supports their goals but also reinforces PPG’s leadership in sustainable innovation.”
PPG's commitment to sustainability is further underscored in its latest Sustainability Report, which highlights the company's progress towards its 2030 targets. These targets include reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions throughout its operations and value chain, as well as continued growth in sales of sustainably advantaged products, driven by increasing customer demand for greener solutions.
But this is where things get controversial: While PPG is actively promoting sustainability in Europe, some critics argue that more needs to be done globally.
