After you have the dough unrolled, cut the dough into 3 inch by ½ inch strips.

Then take a piece of dough and use your hands to roll it into a rope shape that is about 5 inches long.

When the dough is long enough, use your hands to carefully tie the dough rope into a knot and then place it on the cookie sheet.

Continue to do that with each piece of dough until you are done.

Then in a large sauce pan, heat 5 cups of water mixed with the baking soda. Heat it all together until it comes to a boil.

Now, carefully drop 6 of the dough knots into the boiling water.

Let the knots cook for 30 seconds in the water or until the dough looks slightly puffed up and dimpled.

Use a slotted spoon to gently remove the knots from the water and place them back on the cookie sheet about ½ inch apart.

Then add in the remaining pretzel knots and do the same process.

Why Do You Soak Pretzels in Baking Soda?

The reason to soak pretzels in baking soda has to do with the reaction the heat in the oven has on the pretzel while it bakes.

Taste of Home has a great article that gives a great explanation for why pretzels are baked with baking soda.

i am going to try it

  4. Debbie says:

I tried these tonight, but made them out of pillsbury bread stick dough. We couldn't find the pizza dough. They came out amazing. I dredged them in butter and then sprinkled them with sea salt! So easy and so good.
    Happy New Year!

  5. Gina says:

I made these tonight with the whole grain artisan pizza dough! They were super good! I used traditional yellow mustard to dip them in. Just beware that the baking soda does give it a salty taste so keep that in mind when you're adding the salt. I also brushed mine with butter when they first came out of the oven! Would definitely make these again! Thanks!

  6. whatdoisaytothat.org says:

Can you multiply the recipe without multiplying the water/baking soda combo?

  7. Six Sisters says:

It depends how much you are multiplying it by. If you were just doubling the recipe, you would probably be fine with the original measurements. Hope this helps! -The Six Sisters

  8. Sarah Kelly says:

I tried these for New Years Eve; DELISH!! So excited to have "homemade" soft pretzels that don't require actually making the dough :D Question: I'm thinking about simplifying it even further and cutting slightly shorter and wider pieces, skipping the knotting, and going for more of a nugget. Do you think this would turn out if I followed the rest of the directions as noted? Thanks for your advice!

  9. Tracey says:

I am wondering about using the fresh pizza dough that you can purchase in the deli departments at grocery stores. If you were to roll that out, cut and knot would that work?

  10. Cyd says:

Sounds delicious! Give it a try!

  11. Michelle Sexton says:

These came out a little doughy for me. The outside cooked quicker than the inside. Maybe I made them too big? How many is this recipe supposed to make?

  12. D. Maynard says:

I think it'd be nice to have 2 types of dip to serve with these. Does anyone have a favorite mustard dip recipe to share?

  13. Kathryn says:

I'm confused by the measurement for the strips of dough. Are you cutting them into 3 1/2 inch strips and then rolling them into 5 inch long ropes? Just wanted to clarify that. Thanks!

  14. Cyd says:

Hi Kathyn, You have it right. Cut them into 3 1/2 inch strips. Then roll each strip into a 5 inch rope!

  15. Sabrina B says:

these looks really good, thank you for posting this, wouldn't have thought to make them from scratch!
